Using Laptops Wifi Card In Desktop

Using Laptops Wifi Card In Desktop

Laptops do come with a wifi card by which a user can easily access to wireless network without using any external adapters. But, the desktop motherboards (especially the budget ones) don’t come with wifi adapters.

That’s why in desktop PCs, you have to install a wifi adapter. Now, I always get questions like using laptop’s wifi cards on desktops. So, if anyone has old laptops in their home, can they able to use that and make a free adapter in desktop. Well, let’s discuss it in this post:

Can You Use Laptop Wifi Card On Desktop? It is possible to use a laptop’s wifi card on desktop’s motherboard, but it has to be done through a PCIe adapter. As laptop wifi cards are small, so first, the user has to install it on a mini PCIe adapter, then insert it in the desktop motherboard.

However, it is not a straightforward process, and as different laptops do come with different wifi cards, so you have to make sure that the wifi card, as well as the desktop motherboard, supports the PCIe adapter.

Also, it is also important to have a bit of knowledge about laptops as well as desktops about their slots.

Moreover, in the price of the PCIe mini adapter which you have to buy for installing a wifi card in desktop, you can buy a new wifi adapter for your desktop

That’s why, although using a wifi card on desktop is possible but as it is not that beneficial and also not so simple, that’s why I prefer buying an adapter for your desktop rather this.

Still, if you have a very high-speed wifi card (with wifi 6) in your laptop and you want to use it somehow on desktop, then follow this process:

How Can You Connect Laptop Wireless Card To Your Desktop?

The first thing you have to do for using your laptop’s wifi card is detaching from the laptop motherboard. Do this:

Find Out Wifi Card On Laptop:

  • First, remove the battery and unscrew your laptop and open the black plastic or metal panel in the back.
  • Then carefully check its motherboard, there you can see a wifi card as shown in the picture.
  • Disconnect the wifi antenna and then unscrew the actual wifi card.

Choosing Parts:

After taking out the wifi card from the laptop, our next step will be to select a PCIe mini adapter that supports this wifi card.

Most of the laptop’s wifi cards are support M.2 while others run on mini PCIe. So, choose a PCIe adapter for your desktop according to your laptop’s wifi card.

The second thing we need for this is two U.FL to RP-SMA cables. Now, if you are buying a good adapter, then they do come with these cables.

So, just check if your adapter has them or not. After that you are ready to go:

Installing Laptop Wifi Card In Desktop:

  • Attach the cables from the PCIe adapter with both sides of the wifi card (can leave the third one if the adapter has).
  • Then install the wifi card and the adapter has any metal plate, install that too.
  • Then insert the PCIe adapter in the motherboard of the desktop, that’s it.

After doing this you can easily access wifi on your desktop.

Is It A Good Idea Using Laptop Wifi Card In Desktops?

Using a laptop wifi card on the desktop is not a very easy process, especially finding the adapter that matches the specific laptop wifi card. As in the price of the laptop’s wifi adapter, users can easily buy a new full wifi adapter for desktop, so the second way is much easier and also time-saving.

So, I will still advice to buy a new wifi external adapter or PCIe adapter whatever you like for your desktop rather than using laptop’s wifi cards.

Now, let’s look at some of the convenient/easier ways by which you can use wifi on your desktop other than a laptop’s wifi card.

More Convenient Methods For Accessing Internet In Desktop:

External USB Adapters:

These are the cheapest ($5-$6) USB wifi adapters which you have to insert in a USB port in your desktop, install the driver and that’s it.

You can easily get around 20Mb/s to 30Mb/s with these USB wifi adapters. However, these are not for those who want fast speed, buy perfect for normal users who just wanna scroll the internet, see some videos.

PCIe Wifi Cards:

PCIe wifi adapter is another option but unlike an external USB adapter, you have to install it on the motherboards PCIe slots.

Although it is a bit expensive than the previous one, in terms of speed it can give the best wireless internet speed.

Now, don’t get confused about the PCIe mini adapter that I have asked to buy above, it was for installing a laptop wifi card on a desktop.

But in desktop PCIe WiFi cards, you don’t have to touch it, just install it on the slot and you are good to go.

This is the best wifi method if you deal with big data files, has to download often like gamers.

Motherboard’s Wifi:

Even desktops motherboards also do come with inbuilt wifi. However, only some of the latest motherboards do have wifi, but still, you should check your motherboards feature before buying any external adapter for it.

Generally, motherboard wifis are fast depending on their wifi variations and you don’t have to worry about wifi if you have one in your motherboard.

Now, internet received from ethernet cables directly to the PC is still the fastest internet connection. But as it is not wifi that’s why I am excluding it from this list.

But if you want the fastest possible internet, then you should go with ethernet cables.
