Desktop Vs Laptop lifespan

Desktop Vs Laptop: Which Last Longer

Although laptop and desktop are both computers but there are huge differences between them. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages too, desktop gives better performance in less price while laptop provides better portability and comes in a very small form factor.

But what about their lifespan, Which one of them lasts more? Well, let’s discuss it in this post:

Lifespan Of Desktops Vs Laptops: Laptops usually lasts 5-6 years while desktops can last from 6 up to 8 years. However, unlike laptops as changing a part in desktops is possible, so if the user upgrades the parts from time to time it can last forever.

On average, if you don’t upgrade any parts in both your desktop, it lasts 6-8 years while laptops last 5-6 years. So, this gives an answer to the question:

Which Lasts Longer Desktop Or Laptop? As desktops parts can be upgraded, replaced easily, so desktops last longer than laptops. The user can keep on replacing the parts to keep up it updated.

On the other hand, you can’t upgrade a laptop. After the parts like CPU, GPU, RAM gets outdated you have to say goodbye and shift to a new model. Still, if you don’t upgrade your desktop also, then also it lasts more than laptops.

Now, let’s discuss in detail:

Why Desktops Last More Than Desktop?

Cooling And Power Supply:

The cooling and the airflow of desktops are much better than laptops. As laptops are very small, so the airflow in Laptops is very less compared to a desktop cabinet which is very large.

Moreover, as laptops are small, so they can’t have too many fans inside. Also, most of the cooling in laptops depends only on the heatsink.

That’s why in general desktops come with better cooling than Laptops. But how this affects the lifespan?

If the cooling system of any desktop or laptop can’t able to cool down the heat quickly, over a long period of time it can damage parts like CPU, GPU, motherboard, PSU, etc.

That’s why, as desktops mostly have better cooling, so this is a big reason because of which they last longer.

Physical Damage:

Laptops are portable, although it is a very big plus point for laptops but sometimes also causes trouble.

As we carry laptops everywhere with us so high chances occurs that they slip from our hand and get fall damage

Believe it or not, this is another factor because of which most of the laptops can’t last long.

But as you can’t carry your desktop with you, bring it everywhere you go, so desktops don’t get any fall damage and also lasts long.

Upgradable Parts:

You can easily upgrade and replace any desktop parts. There are many brands which manufacture different PC parts and you can select the best one according to the budget you have and the performance you need.

You just have to check whether the part supports the motherboard or where you will be installing the new part and you can use that part.

On the other hand, you can’t upgrade your laptop after you buy it once. After it gets outdated, you will not have any other options than to switch to a newer model.

Overall, you can use your desktop as long as you want if you upgrade the parts.

Now, how a user’s mistake can decrease the lifespan of a desktop and a laptop:

Things That Can Shorten Your Computers Lifespan:

Not Shutting Down Property:

Shutting down makes sure that all the background tasks, software that are running are properly closed before shutting down the computer.

Not only that, but shut down also protects the data. That’s why if you don’t shut down your computer before turning it off, then you might see data loss and it can also damage the storage drive in the longer run.

Now I am not saying about closing the lid in laptops. As laptops are often put into sleep mode by closing the screen or the lid, don’t worry there is nothing wrong with that.

So, just make sure to shut down your laptop and desktop property before turning it off especially if it is doing any copy-pasting work.

Overclocking Too Much:

Overclocking is basically a process where you give more power to the CPU, GPU, or the part which you are overclocking and it gives more performance.

However, overclocking at a certain point is beneficial but for getting more performance, you shouldn’t overclock them to an extreme point, which they can’t handle.

Doing this you not only risk damage to your PC but I’m some cases it decreases performance rather increase because of expressive heat production.

So, overclocking too much in PC’s especially if cooling is not great is not a good idea. It can damage your computer forever.

Not Cleaning Regularly:

Computers attract dust particles inside them through fans. Over a long period of time, the dust and debris can completely heat up the whole system.

So, you should clean your laptop or desktop top regularly (3 months) so that it can last more and give better performance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Can A Laptop Last 10 Years?

It is very rare for a laptop to last 10 years. Although if it lasts, then also it might not be able to run the latest software, games of that time.

As technology is rapidly changing, so it is unlikely that after 10 years, a laptop can keep up with that time laptops.

Can A Desktop Last 10 Years?

A desktop can last 10 years but the user has to upgrade the parts from time to time. As 10 years is a lot so there are high chances that some desktop parts like CPU, GPU, Motherboard will get outdated in this interval.

If you do this, your desktop can last 10 Years.
